Strasbourg lives between two worlds: the medieval Grande Île, pressed around the cathedral and the half-timbered houses of La Petite France, and the Neustadt, the imperial city built in the German period, with its broad avenues and its university. Everywhere, the Ill and its canals shape the city — and it is often on the quays that people here meet.

No sponsored rankings on this page: every place is recommended by Spoooters, locals who genuinely go there. The more a place is recommended, the higher it climbs.

Local tips

  1. 01

Go up onto the Barrage Vauban

The roof of the old defensive dam has been turned into a panoramic terrace. From up there the Ponts Couverts lie at your feet and the cathedral is straight ahead: one of the finest views over La Petite France.

The parade of the apostles, at solar noon

The cathedral’s astronomical clock is set to Strasbourg local time, half an hour behind legal winter time. Its parade of the apostles therefore happens once a day, at 12.30 pm.

Treat yourself to the Bains Municipaux

It is the single most recommended address in the city among Spoooters. Opened in 1908, these baths with their neoclassical colonnades hold two pools and Roman baths with saunas and steam rooms, in an interior that has barely changed.

    Walk across the Neustadt

From place de la République to the Palais Universitaire, the former imperial axis has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage perimeter since 2017. Another face of Strasbourg, ten minutes from the cathedral.

    A Sunday at the Orangerie

The Parc de l’Orangerie is the favourite walk of Strasbourg Spoooters. Carry on to the university’s botanical garden, quieter, to finish the stroll.

    A Christmas market since 1570

The Christkindelsmärik has been held since 1570 and was long the only Christmas market in the country. The city is very busy in December: book early and wander on a weekday if you can.

    Taste the Alsatian classics

A tarte flambée or a choucroute in a winstub, a pretzel on the go, a kougelhopf for breakfast, bredele at Christmas, and a glass of Riesling or Crémant d’Alsace.

Did you know?

La Marseillaise was born in Strasbourg

On the night of 25–26 April 1792, the officer Rouget de Lisle wrote a “War Song for the Army of the Rhine” in Strasbourg. The following evening it was sung for the first time at the home of the mayor, Philippe-Frédéric de Dietrich, on place Broglie. It would become La Marseillaise.

La Petite France is named after a hospital

Nothing to do with France: the quarter takes its name from a hospice that treated syphilis, known at the time as the “French disease”. Before it became the postcard image of Strasbourg, this was the district of tanners, millers and fishermen.

The Covered Bridges are no longer covered

Built in the 13th century, these bridges were wooden galleries protected by tiled roofs. The roofs were removed in 1784, and the bridges rebuilt in stone in 1865. The name stayed, as did four of the towers that guarded them.

Neighborhoods to know

La Petite France
Half-timbered houses, canals and locks: the old tanners’ quarter, best seen early before the crowds, then from the Barrage Vauban.
Around the cathedral
The heart of the Grande Île: the cathedral, the Palais Rohan, the museums on place du Château and, close by, the Grand’Rue and its recommended tables.
La Krutenau
The student quarter, just across the Ill, for bars, wine cellars and neighbourhood cafés.
La Neustadt
The imperial city of the late 19th century: broad avenues, place de la République, the Palais Universitaire and the botanical garden.
Rue du Faubourg-de-Pierre
A street of small designer shops and studios, for shopping well away from the chains.
